Derby businesses are backing one of the city’s biggest cultural arts events of the year, with local heating manufacturer, Vaillant UK announced as the headline sponsor of Helios at Derby Cathedral.
The spectacular seven-metre artwork will transform the Cathedral from 20 to 31 October, giving visitors the chance to come face-to-face with the sun as part of the Cathedral’s celebrations for its 100th anniversary in 2027.
The installation features detailed observations and photographs from NASA with sunspots and solar filaments brought to life through animated lighting and a specially created soundtrack.
More than 20,000 people are expected to visit Helios, which brings art, science and- music together.
Alongside sponsorship from Vaillant UK, and other local businesses, the installation is made possible through funding support from Cathedral Quarter BID, National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Friends of Derby Cathedral and All Saints Trust.
Henrik Hansen, Managing Director of Vaillant UK, said:
As a business with more than 90 years of heritage in Derbyshire, we're passionate about supporting initiatives that make a positive difference to the region.
Helios is a fantastic example of how art, science and community can come together to inspire curiosity, spark conversations and create a shared experience for people of all ages. We're proud to be the headline sponsor and help bring this remarkable event to Derby, creating something that will be enjoyed by thousands of local residents and visitors alike.
Tom Wyke, Head of Fundraising at Derby Cathedral, said:
It’s fantastic to see Derby businesses coming together to support the arts and help us bring something really special to the city.
Vaillant UK, has shown significant commitment to Derby, and we’re incredibly grateful for their support.
Helios is about bringing people together through art, science and creativity, and it’s wonderful to see the business community getting behind that too.
Five bronze sponsorship packages have also been taken up, with two remaining opportunities for businesses that want to support Helios and play a part in a major cultural event for Derby.
Tom added:
We’d love to see even more Derby businesses get behind Helios.
Whether businesses want to make a larger commitment or simply play their part in helping us bring this incredible artwork to the city, there are still opportunities to get involved.
There is no charge to enter Derby Cathedral to see Helios, although visitors will be encouraged to make a suggested donation of £5 to support the Cathedral’s vision of being a place for all.
The Cathedral is looking ahead to a programme of future events and installations that businesses can sponsor, including the Tree of Light, which will be in the Cathedral from 1 December to 6 January.
Visitors will be invited to write messages to hang on its branches to create a collective display of hope, memories and wishes throughout the Christmas season.
In 2027 a programme of embroidery exhibitions will bring further creativity to the Cathedral, including the Circle of Life project – an ambitious piece of traditional English ecclesiastical embroidery created by 12 cathedral workshops across the country. Opportunities will be available for businesses to support through sponsorship.
